I believe I did manage to read the book before seeing the film Kes. This is one book I know I've lent and had returned to me. The story is simple and effective; a dispassionate description of school and broken family life in a mining town where most boys are fated to follow their fathers down the mines when they leave school at age fifteen with no qualifications.The film was quite controversial at the time it was released(1970) but still received a U (Universal) British film board certification.
